Composite fillings (also called white fillings) are a beautiful and healthy alternative to traditional mercury (silver) fillings. Composite fillings are more than just attractive. Composite fillings don’t contain any mercury so they are environmentally non-toxic. Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth making them stronger than mercury (amalgam) fillings. A composite filling also requires less removal of your healthy tooth structure which leaves you with a stronger tooth and less chance of fracturing. The composite filling is virtually undetectable because it is a tooth colored material, making the final restoration virtually invisible.
Composite fillings are used to restore a tooth that has decay on a portion of any tooth, to replace old-fashioned mercury (silver) fillings, and to maintain a white, beautiful smile.
If your tooth has been decayed or injured severely, Dr. Slava may suggest an alternative treatment. Inlays/onlays are sometimes good alternatives to composite fillings, offering excellent long term durability. In some cases of extensive decay, inlays/onlays or crowns are the only alternative.
